For May wol have no slogardie a-night. (Chaucer, early memer of some repute)
This is my down month. I mean, up-down. I mean, um.
I had a busy April, though — alas — less busy than it was supposed to be. (My poetry workshop and Queer Voices reading did not happen.) So I planned to take it easy in May. Successful? Well. I guess we’ll see!
Monday, May 6th, I’m assisting & being mentored by the illustrious, illuminating (but not, AFAIK, Illuminati) Michael Kleber-Diggs, in his poetry course “Line, Sound, Meter, and Voice: Poems as Beautiful Songs,” as part of the ReEntry Lab & ArtStart Writing Fellowship. Mmm…poetry.
On Tuesday, May 7th, the second iteration of Better Things, the event series sponsored by the ReEntry Lab; this will be at Moon Palace Books, from 7:00-8:30 pm.
Wednesday, May 8th, I’m scheduled to be in the Open Book Performance Hall, as part of the Loft’s Spring 2024 Student Reading; doors open at 5:30, and the event starts at 6:00. There will be 10 Loft students reading works of their choice, any genre/format; each student gets 5-7 minutes. The event is free and open to the public. Masks are highly encouraged, but not required. (Sadly, this means I’ll miss the first BuckSlam event since the Midwest Poetry Mash-Up. Ah, well.)
Tuesday, May 14th, Radical Joy Open Mic, at Lutunji’s Palate - I have loved this event & space, though I haven’t been able to make it as often as I’d like. Poetic Mama and Sole2Dotz are taking it over from the inimitable Joe Davis, with a $10 cover charge.
Wednesday, May 15th, Heartbroken Open Mic, in person at the Open Book Performance Hall once again. Really looking forward to this! It’s been a while since we’ve had this face-to-face.
I was hoping to make it to the Re-Verb Open Mic for the first time in like a month, on May 16th. But I think I’ll probably end up at The End Is Queer, at the Walker Art Center. So, maybe the 23rd.
More? TBD. Stay tuned….
